Why traditional rugging creates clutter and compromise

Most rugs are designed for a single condition — one weight, one use, one moment in time.

Over a season, this often leads to multiple rugs, repeated changes and unnecessary complexity in day-to-day care.

How The Cross Layer System Works

One outer. Multiple interchangeable layers.

Built Around One Adaptable Outer

The Foundation

Waterproof outer + breathable mesh layer.

Designed as a complete 0g turnout setup from the start

The waterproof outer and breathable mesh liner work together to improve comfort, airflow, and moisture management.

The mesh layer can also be removed and used independently as a cooler, travel sheet, or lightweight fly layer.

Use the Mesh Layer Independently

Cooler. Travel sheet. Fly Protection.

The breathable mesh layer can be removed from the Foundation System and used independently on warmer days, while travelling, after exercise or in the field.

Designed to provide airflow and comfort without needing a separate setup.

Adapt for Colder Conditions

Add insulation without changing the system.

As temperatures drop, insulated liners can be added in place of the mesh layer while maintaining the same consistent outer fit and structure.

The system is designed to adapt gradually over time — reducing the need for multiple separate rugs throughout the year.

Why the system performs differently

Designed to balance waterproof protection with breathability and comfort.

    Breathable Waterproofing

Designed to balance waterproof protection with airflow and everyday comfort. The outer combines durable weather protection with breathable construction for changing conditions.

    Moisture Management

Most no-fill rugs rely on waterproof coatings alone. The Cross Layer System combines a breathable outer with a wicking mesh layer to help manage airflow and internal moisture during prolonged wet weather.

  • Designed For Safety

Concealed front closures and protected surcingles help reduce snagging during turnout, while shielding straps and fastenings from mud, water and everyday wear.

  • Designed For Movement

Engineered with freedom of movement and turnout comfort in mind. Shoulder gussets and adaptable layering allow the system to move naturally with the horse.

Explore The Turnout System

Beyond Turnout

One liner system. Multiple environments.

Using the same adaptable layering approach, the stable system replaces the turnout outer with a lightweight breathable stable shell while remaining compatible with existing Cross Layer liners.

Designed for stable and travel use without requiring separate rug systems.

Meet the founder.

Cross Section Equestrian was founded by Kirsty Wilson to rethink traditional horsewear through adaptable systems, technical materials and real-world horse care experience.

Today, the system continues to be developed through hands-on testing and direct manufacturing partnerships in India — focusing on function, movement and long-term usability rather than trend-led seasonal products.

As the brand grows, part of that journey is also about supporting small-scale horse welfare initiatives in India through long-term partnerships and direct involvement on the ground.
