Why Buy Our Rugs? The Innovation Behind the Cirra Rug

When I set out to develop a new turnout rug, I was told by many: "a rug's a rug—you can't innovate one." But as I looked closer at all the things that annoyed me about traditional turnout rugs, I found countless issues that just weren’t suited to modern horses and their owners. And so, the journey to create the Cirra Rug began.
Problem #1 : Brand New Rug, Torn on Day One
The Problem: It's frustrating to invest in a rug only to have it ripped within a day—whether it costs £50 or £350. Most rugs have their waterproof coating on the outermost fabric layer, so once it’s torn, it’s no longer waterproof unless you patch it up with tape or own a seam seal taping machine.
Our Solution:
Hidden Closures: Front closures are concealed, and belly surcingle's have their own storm flap
.Less Snag Risk: No more horses getting caught in hay nets or with soggy surcingle's.
Re-designed Layering System: Our outer rug uses a DWR (durable water repellent) finish without a waterproof coating. If torn, it’s easily repairable without losing waterproof integrity.
Affordable Replacement: Just replace the outer rug instead of the whole thing. Mix and match with new prints and colours.
Problem #2 : Dealing With Soaking Wet Rugs
The Problem: Ever brought your horse in and found the rug completely soaked? Common advice includes leaving it on to dry, investing in expensive rug dryers, or building heated rooms—solutions that aren't accessible to everyone.
Our Solution:
Removable Outer Layer: Simply take off the wet layer.
Quick Drying: Towel dry the performance liner and add a fresh, dry outer cover.
Machine Washable: Both layers fit in a domestic machine. Express wash and spin = nearly dry rug.
Problem #3 : Dirty Rugs That Cost a Fortune to Clean
The Problem: Professional laundering is expensive, and self-washing doesn’t get rugs truly clean or waterproof again.
Our Solution:
Machine-Washable Layers: Clean and reproof both outer and inner layers at home.
Better Hygiene: Keep mud, bacteria, and fungus at bay with our antimicrobial lining.
Improved Longevity: Clean rugs perform better and last longer.
Stylish Look: Always show-ready. No more smelly, muddy rugs at competitions.
Problem #4 : Outdated Fabric Technology
The Problem: Traditional horse rugs rely on coated fabrics, which struggle to balance waterproofness and breathability. They're heavy, stiff, and ill-suited for today's unpredictable weather.
Our Solution:
Membrane-Based Liner: Encased in lightweight protective fabrics for superior breathability and waterproofing.
Performance in All Conditions: Whether it's warm and wet or cold and crisp, your horse stays dry and comfortable.
Wicking & Evaporation: Moisture is drawn away from your horse and spread across the liner surface to evaporate quickly.
Why the Cirra Rug is Different
As a materials technologist with 20 years in the outdoor industry, I brought human-level outdoor gear tech to horse rugs. The Cirra Rug redefines turnout rug performance with innovation that keeps horses comfortable, owners stress-free, and budgets intact.
Say goodbye to all the little frustrations you've just learned to live with. Say hello to the future of turnout rugs.
